The Origins of the Puskas Award
The Puskas Award was established in 2009 by FIFA in honor of the legendary Hungarian footballer Ferenc Puskas. Known for his extraordinary goal-scoring ability and creative flair, Puskas left an indelible mark on the sport. The award is presented annually to the player—professional or amateur—who is deemed to have scored the most aesthetically significant goal. While initially aimed at professional players, the inclusion of amateur goals has elevated the award’s significance, showcasing the grassroots talent that flourishes worldwide.
Why the Puskas Award Matters
The Puskas Award serves multiple purposes:
- Celebration of Talent: It highlights the incredible skill and creativity found in amateur soccer, giving recognition to players who may never step onto a professional pitch.

Exceptional Goals from Amateur Players
Amateur soccer players often face numerous challenges, yet their passion and dedication lead to some of the most breathtaking moments on the field. The Puskas Award has recognized several remarkable goals scored by amateurs over the years, each with its unique story. Let’s explore a few standout examples:
The Joy of Grassroots Soccer
Each year, submissions for the Puskas Award flood in, showcasing goals that range from acrobatic volleys to intricate team plays. One notable example is the goal scored by a young player from a small town in Brazil. During a local tournament, he received the ball on the edge of the box, deftly maneuvering past defenders before unleashing a powerful shot that curled into the top corner. This goal not only won the match but also captured the hearts of fans, illustrating the raw talent that exists outside the professional leagues.
Global Perspectives on Amateur Goals
The beauty of the Puskas Award lies in its ability to transcend borders. For instance, in Africa, a young girl playing in a community league scored a stunning goal from outside the penalty area, showcasing her remarkable skill and determination. Her achievement was celebrated not just as a personal victory, but as a symbol of hope and empowerment for young female athletes in a region where women’s sports are often overlooked.
How the Puskas Award is Decided
Each year, FIFA invites fans, players, and coaches to vote on the shortlisted goals, creating an inclusive process that allows soccer enthusiasts to have a say in who deserves the honor. The selection process involves:
- Nominations: Goals are nominated from across the globe, focusing on those that display exceptional skill, creativity, and significance.
- Shortlisting: A panel of experts reviews the nominations to create a shortlist of the most impressive goals.
- Public Voting: Fans around the world can then vote for their favorite goal, ensuring that the winner reflects the collective appreciation of the soccer community.
The Impact of Social Media
In today’s digital age, social media plays a crucial role in promoting amateur talent. Platforms like YouTube and Instagram allow aspiring soccer players to share their incredible goals with a global audience. This visibility not only enhances their chances of recognition through awards like the Puskas but also enables them to connect with coaches, scouts, and fellow players worldwide.
